If it's out of date, will it work?

Nick Ewing The ink cartridge 301 came the next day with no issues on delivery. However, the printer (hp deskjet 2540) isn’t printing any documents. There is a little black smudge at the bottom of the page only and the rest is blank. I am almost certain this is an issue with the printer itself but I am only almost certain, hence the 4 stars.
